- As of now, there are not enough board-certified forensic pathologists to cover the national need in the US and Canada
- For many years, forensic pathology was one of the least advanced medical subspecialties (it had no recognition by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada)
- This situation is gradually improving due to the new focus of professionalizing the field of forensic science
- New post graduate programs are being developed
- With the critical shortage of forensic pathologists in Canada, especially in Ontario, those who are in practice are burdened with heavy caseloads
- Only Alberta, Ontario, Nova Scotia and Quebec have stand-alone governmental facilities to provide forensic pathology services, thus they are the regions that have high demands for forensic pathologists
