EDUCATION
Forensic pathologists are required to obtain the same basic training that physicians or other medical careers have.
To pursue a career through McMaster University, the recommended pathway would be:
Secondary School
Students are recommended to take science and math related courses. For the Health Sciences faculty, the course admission requirements are at least 6 U/M level courses, including: 1. Grade 12 U English (ENG4U) 2. Grade 12 Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), or Grade 12 Data Management (MDM4U) 3. Grade 12 U Biology (SBI4U) 4. Grade 12 U Chemistry (SCH4U) 5. One non-math; non-science; non-technology U/M credit In order to submit an application for Health Sciences at McMaster University, you must have an average of at least 90% with the 6 admission courses and you need you write a supplementary application. |
Post-Secondary
After receiving a degree in BHSc, students are required to take the MCAT in order to apply to Med School at McMaster University. After completing Med School and receiving the MD degree, the student must then complete a 4-5 year residency program for anatomical pathology. An additional 1-2 years of schooling in a residency program or fellowship is required to specialize into forensic pathology. After all that schooling, the student must complete the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). Finally, they have to obtain a license from the province/territory of where they will be working in. |
